PAPUA NEW GUINEA COLLECTION
The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory has a significant collection of Papua New Guinean art and artefacts. The collection has grown through purchases as well as the generosity of donors over many years. Many works were collected in the field and later donated to MAGNT.
Works acquired from regions across PNG convey the strong grasp of customary belief and innovative practice in the art created in these areas. Shields, masks, body adornment and objects demonstrate the rich belief systems that continue to inform PNG life and showcase the regional differences in style across the country.
