What is EXIT ART?

Every year the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT), in partnership with the Northern Territory Department of Education, hosts EXIT ART to showcase art and design projects created by Stage 2 students from across the NT.

 

Eligibility

Students who have created an artwork, a design project or product for assessment in 2023 in the below Stage 2 Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) subjects are eligible to apply:

• Visual Arts-Art

• Visual Arts-Design

• Creative Arts specialising in the visual arts or digital arts

 

The product or project must have been completed for Assessment Type 2: Practical for Visual Arts-Art and Visual Arts-Design or Assessment Type 1: Product for Creative Arts.

How to apply?

• Applicants are invited to submit an electronic registration form (http://magnt.smartygrants.com.au/) before Midnight on Monday 13 November 2023.

• It is important to remember that the ‘applicant’ on the online form is the student whose artwork is being entered for EXIT ART

• The teacher or parent/s can also apply on behalf of a student (with student’s permission)

What the online application requires:

• The applicant’s (student’s) personal contact details – NOT a school email address

• Parent / guardian contact details

• Teacher contact details

• Stage 2 subject that was studied

• School where the Stage 2 subject was studied

• Artwork details: title, year, medium/s, dimensions or film duration

• Image (jpeg, 300dpi) or link to film. Images of near-finished artworks are acceptable

• An artist’s statement (max 150 words)

• Declaration of authenticity

• Applicant’s permission to display artwork in the exhibition and to be interviewed for the film

What are the selection criteria?

The criteria for selection into the exhibition are as follows.

• Technical skill

• Creativity (imagination)

• Innovation (doing things differently)

• Emotional power (the ability to generate an emotional response)

• Well resolved (aesthetically strong and meets the aims as stated in the artist’s statement)

• Artwork dimensions cannot exceed 3m x 3m

Selection process

• A selection panel comprising representatives from MAGNT, Northern Territory Department of Education and the Art Educators of the Northern Territory (not a teacher of any applicant) will meet and review all applications

• A final selection of artworks for exhibition in EXIT ART will be made by the selection panel

How will students and schools know if their work is selected for exhibition?

• All applicants and schools will be notified of the outcome of the selection process by Friday 17 November 2023

​

What to do if your work is selected?

• Successful applicants will need to deliver their artwork, ready for display, to MAGNT: Wednesday 22 – Friday 24 November 2023

• The accompanying artwork folio might also be selected

​

Guidelines for artwork

• Artworks to be delivered to MAGNT finished and ready for display, including with appropriate hanging systems or supports

• Artworks on canvas or linen to be completely dry

• Fixatives and binders to be applied to prevent natural pigments from flaking, smudging

• or lifting from the surface

• Sculptures to be packed in absorbent material to avoid damage during transport

• Digital entries to be submitted as JPEG, GIF, MP3, MP4, WMV, QuickTime or MOV file

Note:

• Artworks that arrive incomplete or damaged will not be displayed

• MAGNT reserves the right to not display an artwork it deems unsuitable for exhibition

Film Interview

• Selected finalist applicants will be invited to be interviewed for a short film when delivering their artwork to MAGNT

• The interview will discuss the applicant’s artwork and their experience studying a Stage 2 Visual Arts or Creative Arts subject

• The film will be presented in the EXIT ART exhibition and at the Senior Art Study Days. It will also feature on the MAGNT website and the MAGNT YouTube channel.
